NYFW: Helping Marc Jacobs Prepare for Showtime

I had the amazing opportunity to return to the Marc Jacobs International office to help the design team prepare for their New York Fashion Week runway show. The fashion industry was in full swing, and the whole city was buzzing with talk of the latest runway presentations.

I arrived to the SoHo office on Friday afternoon and immediately began work on the show garments. The styling department was already at work putting together show looks and there were many changes that needed to be made to the different designs. I worked on making alterations to show garments and made trips back and forth to the styling floor across the street and the showroom on the 9th floor. It was a lot of fun to observe model casting and fittings, and get to see the various creative designers, including Marc Jacobs himself give their input on the designs.

It’s hard to imagine how many clothing and accessory items go into the runway show, but the entire styling room floor was filled with racks of garments, and tables of neatly displayed shoes, colorful scarves, jewelry and bags.

A lot of what I did in preparation the days before the show was garment alterations. I enjoyed being able to work on the runway looks ahead of time, and getting an understanding of what changes are typically made to looks in the final days before a show.

When show day came around, it was really neat to see the backstage scene of Marc Jacobs. Fashion models, like Kendall Jenner, would sit around brightly lit mirrors to get their makeup and hair done. They each had their own rack with their garments hanging on them, perfectly steamed, and photos on the end of each rack showing how the style was supposed to be put together.

Once all the models were changed and lined up, the show was essentially ready to begin.    Because the backstage was all ready to go, I enjoyed watching the show from the audience perspective. The music was bumping and people were snapping photos and singing along to the soundtrack.

From where I was sitting I could see Marc Jacobs sitting front row, nodding his head in excitement and singing along to every word of the tracks. He is very passionate about what he does, and it is always really cool to see that first hand.

The show lasted around 8 minutes and before I knew it, it was over. The front row of bloggers and celebrities jumped up and ran off to the next big show. NYFW is truly one of a kind.

Lilac & Lace

Formal spring events call for pastel colors and bold accessories. For this occasion, I paired my new favorite BCBG dress with a bold necklace and bracelet. I loved the detailing on my dress and wanted that to be my focus, so I kept my jewelry neutral and metallic. I chose to slick back my hair into a ponytail to make the look more modern. My best friend Jessi looked bold and beautiful in her royal blue, Charlotte Russe, jumpsuit. Cheers to some spring weather!
